The traditional gift for a 5th wedding anniversary is wood. Most wooden gifts are things to look at — a frame, a box, a watch kept for special days. A piece of hinoki masu jewelry from Japan is a wood gift she can wear every day: handmade with nail-free joinery that has held Japanese temples together for 1,300 years, and quietly fragrant with the wood itself.

Why the fifth year is wood

The traditional anniversary list moves from fragile to enduring: paper for the first year, cotton for the second, leather for the third — and wood for the fifth. By five years a marriage has put down roots. Like a tree, it has weathered seasons and grown stronger for it. In France the same milestone is called noces de bois, the wood wedding.

That is why the best wood gift is not simply made of wood. It should carry the same idea: something rooted, something that improves with time, something meant to stay.

Beyond the wooden watch

Search for a wood anniversary gift and you will find the same few ideas: engraved frames, wooden watches, cutting boards, keepsake boxes. They are thoughtful, but most of them end up on a shelf. KUMIKI is different in three ways:

  • She wears it. Earrings, a necklace, or a kanzashi hair pin — the anniversary goes with her, not into a drawer.
  • It is genuinely crafted. Each masu is about 2cm wide with walls just 1.6mm thin, its corners joined by hand with arare-gumi — interlocking teeth of wood, no nails, no glue. Our atelier completes no more than ten pieces a month.
  • It is hinoki. Japanese cypress, the wood of shrines and temples. Its soft, clean scent remains even after the protective finish.

A vessel that means "to increase"

A masu is the small wooden box Japan has used for 1,300 years to measure rice and sake — and to toast at weddings. Its name sounds like the Japanese word for "to increase" (増す). To give a masu is to wish that what you share keeps growing: masu-masu, more and more.

For a fifth anniversary, there is no simpler way to say it. Five years in — and may it keep increasing.

Choosing the piece

Every piece is the same masu, made the same way. What changes is how she will wear it.

Ready to give, the moment it arrives

Every piece arrives in a hinoki masu box, tied with mizuhiki.

There is nothing to wrap. Every KUMIKI arrives in a hinoki masu box tied with a red mizuhiki cord — the ceremonial knot Japan uses for gifts that matter — together with a display case and an owner's masu badge. She opens the box, the scent of hinoki rises, and when the piece is not being worn it can be displayed. All of this is included, with free tracked and insured shipping worldwide.

When to order

Each piece is made after you order it, so delivery takes 2–4 weeks. For an anniversary, order at least a month ahead. If the date is near Christmas, order by November 25 for international delivery or December 5 within Japan.

Wood Anniversary — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the traditional 5th wedding anniversary gift?

Wood. In the traditional anniversary list used in the US and UK, the fifth year is the wood anniversary — a symbol of a marriage that has put down roots and grows stronger with time. In France it is called noces de bois.

What is a good wooden 5th anniversary gift for her?

Look for something she can wear every day, not only display. KUMIKI hinoki masu jewelry — earrings, necklaces and a kanzashi hair pin built around the world's smallest hand-joined masu, with walls 1.6mm thin — turns the wood anniversary into a piece of jewelry made with 1,300-year-old Japanese joinery.

Is hinoki wood jewelry durable enough to wear daily?

Yes. Each KUMIKI masu receives a protective coating for everyday wear, and hinoki is naturally resistant to moisture. Avoid long soaking in water or extreme humidity. The gentle hinoki fragrance remains after coating.

How much does KUMIKI jewelry cost?

From ¥39,800 (approx. $250) for the Blossom ball earrings, ¥66,000 (approx. $410) for earrings, ¥77,000 (approx. $480) for the kanzashi, and ¥88,000 (approx. $545) for necklaces. Free worldwide shipping and gift packaging are included.

When should I order for an anniversary?

Each piece is made to order and arrives 2–4 weeks after you order, so order at least one month before the date. For Christmas delivery, order by November 25 (international) or December 5 (Japan).

Five years of roots. A piece of Japan, worn every day.
